ABOUT THE MUSIC
This version twists up the classic opening section of the of Part 1 from the iconic 70s Tubular Bells album. He transforms the music into something much darker and more frightening than original.
Compositionally, it is very much the same as the original opening segment of the 29 minute Part 1, but like the 45 record, it is seriously truncated.
It starts with a deep tribal drum thumping with accents of low celeste bells and continues on as the classic melody line begins. To the listener it almost sounds like muffled music one would hear when outside a nightclub, in this case, outside the gates of hell.
A new counter-melody is introduced (not in the original) over the continuinig repeating iconic melody. As the music (and listener) proceed further into Hell, there are various percussion instruments (metallic and wood claps) that start clanging about as the male chorus hums the ascending and descending bass line.
The chorus at one point joins in with the celeste as both engage in a "call and response" technique". In this case, it is used to divide the iconic melody line up between octaves, the first part in one octave and the latter part in another.
There is a section break in the middle that is new in this version that does not exist elsewhere. While the melody continues on through this break, there is a build up of the percussion instruments and the chorus to a big climax before retunring to a reprise of the first half of the piece. As the music comes to a close, there is a new fluttering motif that is heard on s synth flute / chorus instrument, indicating something more is coming down the line.
